One of the largest battles of the first world war took place on this land.

The first world war continues to be called the Great War even today. In fact, this is what the soldiers baptized the conflict during the very first months of the war. For four years, between 1914 and 1918, 40 nations from around the world became involved in the war.

On one side : the Central Powers of Germany, Italy, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
And on the other : The Allied Powers of France, Great Britain, and Russia.
Just before the battle began, the two sides were carefully observing one another from their respective camps.
